If that system is not tested and maintained, it can fail to detect a leak, release when it should not or stay impaired for weeks because a spare is stuck in customs. Each of those risks means a trip, downtime, an insurer asking hard questions or, in the worst case, a fire that destroys the unit.
USP&E Helps You Keep Fire and Gas Systems Ready Across Africa
We know that remote sites cannot wait for a specialist to fly in every time a detector fails. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers run gas turbine O&M across Africa with local crews, regional spares and clear test records. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not need a specialist on every site. You need a clear asset list, a test schedule that satisfies the code and your insurer, spares within reach and local technicians trained to do the work safely.
Know Every Device on Every Site
List every gas detector, flame detector, heat detector, manual call point, suppression system, damper and panel on each gas turbine site. Include the make, model, location and last test date. Across a fleet in several countries, the same unit type often has different detection systems fitted over the years.
Check that each device still matches the risk. Gas detectors must sit where gas would collect, flame detectors need a clear view and dampers must close fully when the system releases. A layout change or new equipment inside the enclosure can leave a detector blind.
Use one register for the whole fleet. It makes spares planning, training and audit much simpler, and it fits into the wider O&M service records your team already keeps.
Test, Record and Clear Impairments Fast
Set a test and inspection schedule that meets the code and your insurer’s rules: detector tests and calibration, cylinder weight or pressure checks, damper tests, panel function tests and full system tests during outages. Write each result down with the date and the technician’s name.
Treat every impairment as urgent. When a detector or the suppression system is out of service, put temporary measures in place, record the start and end, and clear it as fast as parts allow. Long impairments are what insurers notice first.
Review the system after every alarm, release or near miss. A false release costs a refill and a trip; a missed detection is far worse. Each event teaches you something about location, settings or maintenance. Fire and gas care also belongs in any gas turbine LTSA scope you agree.
Stock Spares and Train Local Technicians
Stock detector heads, calibration gas, suppression cylinders or refill arrangements, damper parts and panel cards where your sites can reach them. Customs clearance for cylinders and calibration gases can take weeks in some countries, so plan regional stores and import paperwork in advance. Our mining clients clients often share regional stores for this reason.
Train local technicians to test, isolate and restore systems safely, including the lock-out steps that stop an accidental release during work. A trained local crew clears most faults in hours rather than days.
The same discipline protects every gas-fired asset: gas turbine generators, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. In hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute need the same tested protection. For mechanical faults, our sister site on generator repair covers the workshop side.
USP&E Teams Behind Your African O&M Site
Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your Frame 6B O&M network in Africa from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.
Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for Frame 6B spares, field tooling and service crews; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.
For fire and gas service, Johannesburg and Cape Town teams can build your fleet register, train local technicians and hold regional spares so impairments are cleared in hours, not weeks. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has carried 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

FAQ: Africa GT Fire and Gas System Service Network
What does a gas turbine fire and gas system include?
USP&E services systems that typically include gas detectors, flame and heat detectors, manual call points, suppression cylinders, enclosure dampers and a control panel. Together they detect leaks or fire, alarm, trip the unit and release suppression. Each part must be tested for the system to work.
How often should fire and gas systems be tested?
USP&E sets test schedules from the applicable code, the system maker’s guidance and your insurer’s rules. Detector tests and calibration, cylinder checks and damper tests run at fixed intervals, with full system tests during planned outages. Every result should be recorded.
What is an impairment and why does it matter?
USP&E calls any period when part of the fire and gas system is out of service an impairment. During it, the unit is less protected. Impairments should have temporary measures, a recorded start and end, and fast repair, because long impairments raise both risk and insurer concern.
Why stock fire system spares regionally in Africa?
USP&E stocks detector heads, calibration gas and cylinder arrangements regionally because customs clearance for gases and pressure vessels can take weeks in some countries. A regional store lets local crews clear faults quickly instead of leaving a unit impaired while parts are imported.
Where are USP&E’s offices for African O&M?
USP&E supports African O&M from Johannesburg and Cape Town, with teams that reach sites across the continent. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville support US gas turbine supply and engineering, and Wuxi follows up equipment made in China.
Has USP&E delivered O&M on African plants before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. USP&E has also refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house, and a public case study covers a Mali O&M recovery.
Is USP&E a broker for O&M services?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E runs O&M with its own engineers and technicians, so the team that tests your fire and gas systems is the same team that trains your crews, holds the spares and answers for the readiness of every site.
How fast can USP&E respond to a fire system fault?
USP&E can advise on temporary measures as soon as you report a fault, then send a technician or guide your local crew with parts from the nearest store. The goal is to clear the impairment in hours wherever access and parts allow.
Keep Your Fire and Gas Systems Ready Every Day
Maintain your fire and gas systems well and every turbine stays protected, insured and online. Let tests slip and one leak or false release can cost a unit or a season. USP&E will help you test, stock and train with confidence.
