On many African sites, battery rooms run hot, dust gets everywhere and replacement banks are weeks away. If nobody tests capacity, you discover a failed bank during a blackout, with bearing damage, a long repair and lost production as the result.
USP&E Helps You Service GT DC Batteries Across Africa
We know DC systems sit quietly in a corner and only get attention when something has already gone wrong. With 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, USP&E puts 400+ engineers and project managers behind you; they register, test and replace DC battery banks and chargers on turbine fleets across Africa, with supply routes agreed before a bank fails. You get ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified quality and safety systems, with FCPA and OFAC compliance on every contract. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Batteries give warnings through voltages, temperatures, connection condition and capacity tests. Collect that evidence on a schedule and you replace banks on your terms, not after a blackout exposes them.
Register Every Bank and Its Duty
List every DC battery bank and charger in your fleet: battery type, install date, number of cells or blocks, charger model and settings, and the loads each bank carries. Include turbine control and protection, emergency lube oil pumps, switchgear tripping supplies and any black-start controls.
Record the duty each bank must meet. The emergency lube oil pump must run for the full turbine run-down and cool-down period, and protection must stay alive long enough to clear a fault. Your bank must hold that duty at the end of its life, not just when new.
Note who supplies each battery type and how long replacement takes to reach site, including customs. That list becomes your replacement plan.
Control Heat and Trend the Readings
Heat is the main enemy of batteries in Africa. A bank kept in a hot room ages much faster than its rated life suggests. Check battery room temperature and ventilation, keep sun off the walls where you can, and make sure air conditioning or ventilation is maintained as carefully as the turbine itself.
Trend cell or block voltages, float voltage, charger output and room temperature on a fixed schedule. Inspect connections for corrosion and looseness and check torque, because a single bad connection can stop a bank delivering current when it is needed.
Keep chargers set correctly. Overcharging dries and heats batteries, while undercharging leaves them unable to carry the load. Check charger settings against the battery maker’s figures, especially after a charger repair or replacement.
Test Capacity and Plan Replacement
Voltage readings alone cannot prove capacity. Run a capacity or discharge test at the interval the battery maker recommends, with a temporary bank or other protection in place so the turbine is never left without DC supply during the test.
Replace banks that fall below the capacity your duty needs. Hold replacement banks on the shelf or agree supply routes before a weak bank fails a test, and ask your crew to test the emergency lube oil pump on DC as part of every outage. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines or natural gas engines/stations can cover generation if a unit must stand down for DC work.
Every turbine fleet needs this discipline, whatever its size. On remote mines your gas turbine generators need it, and so do the AI gas turbines and hyperscale generators on compute campuses, and gas turbines for compute in hyperscale EPC/O&M work, because all of them rely on tested DC systems, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA will be handed over with battery test records like any other unit.
Global Offices Behind Your African O&M Programme
Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your Frame 6B O&M network in Africa in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.
When Frame 6B spares, field tooling and service crews must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.
For DC battery service, Johannesburg and Cape Town O&M engineers can check battery rooms and chargers with your site electricians and plan capacity tests around your outage windows. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. One accountable team behind 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

FAQ: Africa Service GT DC Battery Net
Why do GT DC batteries matter so much?
USP&E treats DC batteries as critical because they keep protection, controls and the emergency lube oil pump running after AC power is lost. Your turbine needs them to shut down safely. A weak bank can turn a simple trip into bearing damage and a long repair.
How does heat affect battery life in Africa?
USP&E sees heat as the main cause of short battery life on African sites. A bank kept in a hot room ages much faster than its rated life. Your battery room ventilation or air conditioning deserves the same maintenance attention as the turbine itself.
What readings should be trended?
USP&E trends cell or block voltages, float voltage, charger output and room temperature on a fixed schedule. You should also inspect connections for corrosion and looseness. Trends show weak cells and charger problems long before a bank fails during a real event.
Why run a capacity test?
USP&E runs capacity tests because voltage readings cannot prove that a bank will carry its duty. The test shows whether your batteries can power the emergency lube oil pump and protection for the full time required. Temporary DC supply protects the turbine during testing.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support African O&M?
USP&E bases African O&M in Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineers can reach your sites and suppliers quickly. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville source US turbine parts, and Wuxi covers China manufacturing. Every office works from your shared project file.
Has USP&E delivered service work like this before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. You can read each case study and judge the record yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for batteries and DC systems?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that services and operates plants with its own engineers, so the team that tests your DC systems also replaces failing banks and answers to you for safe turbine shutdowns.
How fast can USP&E respond on a battery concern?
USP&E can start reviewing your battery lists, charger settings and test records as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag overdue tests and hot battery rooms first, then plan site checks, with timing set by outage windows and access.
Make Sure Your Turbines Can Always Shut Down Safely
Get DC battery service right and every trip ends with a safe, protected shutdown. Get it wrong and the first sign is a dead bank during a blackout and a damaged turbine. USP&E will help you test, replace and record with confidence.
