If you wait for an alarm or a failed inspection, the risk is burnt liners, cracked transition pieces and damaged turbine blades. That means extended downtime, lost output and a far larger repair bill. A planned nozzle service loop catches problems early and keeps units running while nozzles are refurbished.
USP&E Helps You Keep Every Combustor Burning Evenly
We know your turbines must run on the fuel you can get, far from the nearest workshop. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers operate and maintain gas turbines across Africa. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not need to fly nozzles across the world every time. You need early warning from your exhaust data, a rotable set on hand and a regional loop for cleaning and testing.
Watch the Exhaust Spread for Early Warning
Exhaust temperature spread is your best early warning of nozzle trouble. Thermocouples around the exhaust show whether every combustor is burning evenly. A spread that grows over weeks, or one cold or hot spot that keeps returning, often points to a fouled or damaged nozzle upstream.
Trend the spread against load and fuel. Spreads naturally change with load, so compare like with like. A sudden change after a new fuel delivery points to fuel quality. A slow change points to gradual fouling or wear. Record combustion alarms and flame detector signals beside the trend.
Our field service teams set alarm limits for spread with your operators so problems are flagged early and not explained away.
Inspect, Clean and Flow Test to Limits
Plan nozzle removal with the combustion inspection schedule, or earlier if the spread demands it. Inspect each nozzle for coking, erosion, cracks and damaged tips. Liquid fuel nozzles often suffer more fouling than gas nozzles, especially on lower quality fuel.
Clean and flow test nozzles to the manufacturer’s limits and record the results for each nozzle by position. A nozzle that looks clean can still flow unevenly. Matched sets, where every nozzle flows within a tight band, give the most even combustion.
Keep the records by serial number. Over time they show which positions foul fastest and how fuel quality affects nozzle life. That evidence also supports your long-term service agreement; our guide to the LTSA explains how inspection scopes fit into one.
Use Rotable Sets and Regional Routes
A rotable nozzle set lets the unit return to service with clean, tested nozzles while the removed set is refurbished. Without one, the unit waits for cleaning, testing and shipping. Plan shipping routes, customs paperwork and careful packaging for nozzle sets between sites and workshops, because damaged tips in transit undo the work.
After reinstallation, compare the exhaust spread with the baseline and record the improvement. That closes the loop and tells you whether the problem was nozzles or something else. The same loop serves gas turbine generators of all types, from a remanufactured GE Frame 6B to other used/new gas turbines.
Your natural gas engines/stations, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute run under hyperscale EPC/O&M all benefit from the same early warning, as will the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. FAQ: Africa Service GT Fuel Nozzle Network
How do I know my gas turbine fuel nozzles need attention?
USP&E watches exhaust temperature spread for early warning. A spread that grows over weeks, or a hot or cold spot that keeps returning, often points to a fouled or damaged nozzle. Combustion alarms and flame detector signals help confirm the picture before inspection.
Why does fuel quality affect nozzles in Africa?
USP&E often sees variable fuel quality at African sites. Contaminants, water and heavy components in liquid fuel cause coking and fouling, and dirty gas can erode or block passages. Good fuel treatment and filtration slow the damage, and nozzle records show how much it matters.
What is a rotable nozzle set?
USP&E uses a rotable nozzle set as a spare, clean and tested set that goes into the unit while the removed set is refurbished. It cuts downtime because the unit does not wait for cleaning, testing and shipping. The refurbished set then becomes the next spare.
What does nozzle flow testing show?
USP&E flow tests nozzles to check that each one delivers the right amount of fuel with the right spray. A nozzle can look clean and still flow unevenly. Matched sets with tight flow bands give even combustion and protect the hot section from local overheating.
Where are USP&E’s offices for African gas turbine service?
USP&E manages African gas turbine service from Johannesburg and Cape Town, with teams that reach sites across the continent. London supports contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville back US turbine supply and engineering, and Wuxi follows up equipment made in China.
Has USP&E delivered gas turbine and plant service before?
USP&E has refurbished seven GE Frame 6B gas turbines to zero hours in-house for major US hyperscale data-centre developers. It also supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania, and public case studies cover Golden Pride.
Is USP&E a broker for turbine service?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E operates and maintains turbines with its own people, so the team that trends your exhaust spread is the same team that inspects, refurbishes and refits your nozzles, and then answers for the result on every unit.
How fast can USP&E respond to a rising exhaust spread?
USP&E can start reviewing your exhaust spread trends, fuel records and inspection history as soon as you share them. Engineers advise whether the unit can keep running at load and plan nozzle inspection and replacement at the earliest safe window.
Keep Every Combustor Burning Clean
Run a nozzle service loop and your turbines burn evenly with fewer surprises. Wait for alarms and the damage reaches the hot section. USP&E will help you monitor, refurbish and rotate nozzles with confidence.
